TOPIC: JESUS IS THE WONDERFUL COUNSELOR
TEXT: ISAIAH 9:6-7
Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV)
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
INTRODUCTION.
I
heard the story of a renowned Pastor that was invited to a local assembly for a
three day revival program, when this Pastor got to the Church, the resident
Pastor, who felt that this guest Minister was not well read, somewhat ‘mocked’
him by telling him to make sure he preached his best sermons to his
sophisticated members. The guest accepted and on the first day preached a
sermon titled “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” On day two the sermon was titled “Jesus,
Jesus, Jesus.” On the third and last day of the program it also was “Jesus.
Jesus, Jesus.” When asked why, he told them he had only one message in life and
it was just that. However, the church became transformed because then they all
came to realize that all they needed in life was nothing more than “Jesus,
Jesus, Jesus.” Today, we shall try to know better this Jesus, who is the Christ
of Christmas.
LESSON.
·
A
Child has been born to us and a Son have been given ….both human and divine
·
He
is the One that will carry the burden of governance of the entire universe. For
he will always be in control, in charge of affairs on earth.
·
His
name is Wonderful, Counselor….
-
Wonderful means full of
wonder…it also means – Astonishing….amazing… startling…awe inspiring ….awesome
…marvelous … miraculous …. And extra ordinary…..
-
This
Jesus of Christmas may look like ‘a child’ to many. A child that is unable to
do anything for himself, they don’t know that He is the Son God and He is
amazing….
-
It
is ONLY His ‘Presentation’ that is ‘ordinary’ but they never knew that this
Jesus is extra-ordinary….
-
He
also is Counselor….and this
means he is Adviser – but we
Know that His will is our command….
-
We
need also remember that He is our Counsel,
our Advocate who pleads our
case… He is the source of all Graces
for us.
-
Though
He may look like a child at Christmas but He indeed is co-equal with the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father …. He is all
knowing and all powerful and He not only created all the is, He also rules all
that is ….
-
This
child at Christmas is also our Prince of
Peace.
-
Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no
end. That ‘seed’ of His Kingdom on earth
that was sown in Bethlehem and perfected at Calvary had and will continue to
grow.... Growing physically and even internally. Though the forces of darkness
may continue to raise opposition (Boko Haram, Al- Shabbab, ISIS, ISWAP,
AL-QUEDA etc, there will be no end to the increase of this Kingdom for it is
“…forcefully advancing….” Though God makes use of humans to declare His gospel,
we need always remember that “of the increace….”? The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
CONCLUSION
Therefore
we need remind ourselves that, though he came like a baby that was unable to
talk at Christmas, He indeed is the WORD of God. Though he looked defenseless
at Christmas, He indeed is our Rock of Ages – our Protector. Though he may look
powerless at Christmas, he indeed is the most powerful there is, for demons
tremble at his presence, He is the almighty God….Never mix-up his presentation
at Christmas with the reality of His being, though he came in humble, but
indeed He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords
