TOPIC: AGE: A SINGLE LANE TO ETERNITY
TEXT:
JOEL 2:28; 1 COR. 2:9
Joel 2:28 (NIV)
28 'And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

1 Corinthians 2:9
(NIV)
9 However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"--

INTRODUCTION
One
common phrase is that ‘whatever goes up must come down’, while that is
applicable to most things, it is not applicable to age. For as long as a person
is alive, he/she grows older by the day. Just like someone said, aging is a
special gift from God, we cannot earn
it, buy it or even sell it. it is also something we must be eternally grateful for, because if we
are not old, we would be dead. It is indeed a ‘Single lane to eternity’. Today,
we are gathered here to celebrate those that are going on ahead of us on this
same lane – where they were is where we are and where they are we hope to be
sometime in the future. This lane is indeed the same for all persons, its
beginning point is called ‘birth’ and the end point is called ‘death’. It
doesn’t matter which generation a person lived in, it does not matter the
social status, it does not matter one’s religious inclination. The beginning
and the end point for everyone is the same.
So,
as we celebrate our elders today, we just take some few minutes to discuss
about few things in-between those two points.
1.
GOD HAS AN
ASSIGNMENT FOR YOU NOW. (Joel 2:28)
For
every stage in life, God can use you. You are not too young or too old to be an
instrument of honor in God’s mighty hands. There is an assignment for
everyone….
-
Sons
and daughters – prophesy
-
Young
persons – see visions
-
Old
persons – dream dreams
·
Sons
and Daughters, young persons the time is now to “Remember your Creator in the
days of your youth…” (Eccl. 12:1) As youths, if you refuse to play your role
now, what will you dream about later?
·
Elders,
dream dreams and share your dreams. Your experiences with those of us coming
behind. After all, what agbalagba can
see seated, omo kekere can’t see even
if he climbs a tree.
2.
GOD’S GOODNESS IS
FOR YOU STILL. (1 Cor. 2:9)
God
has a special package for each of us, young or old. Something so spectacular it
is beyond imagination … Whether young or old, just keep loving Him. The One who
does not shift like shadows say He has prepared it for you.
CONCLUSION
Ecclesiastes
12:1-2 (NIV)
1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them"--
2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain;
1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them"--
2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain;
BEFORE can be interpreted to mean ‘prior to’ something… it
can also mean ‘ahead of’ something e.g “I go before you” or ‘in front of’ e.g “I stand before you” So, it is like God is warning us that
ahead of us stands the situation of ‘…the
sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow(ing) dark….” The question
is how well is your today lived before getting to that time that is before you?

PASTOR’S
CORNER
As long as we are not
dead, we grow older by the day. As children of God, we need to know that the
choices we make largely affect our aging process. Therefore, live a life full of God’s grace so
you can age gracefully and even “still bear fruit in old age” (Ps. 92:14)
.
