Sunday Service (23rd June, 2019) - Sunbeam Emphasis Sunday

TOPIC: A CALL TO ONENESS
TEXT: JOHN 17: 20-23
John 17:20-22 (NIV)
20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:
23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
INTRODUCTION
To
God be all the glory for grace to be here today. We thank God for how far the
Lord has led us as a Church. In 2 weeks’ time, by His grace we shall be
celebrating 8 years of existence as a church and some days after that we
celebrate 4 years as an organized church. All glory be onto the Lord. There is
the urgent need for us to review how much progress we have made…. Are we closer
together now than we were 8 years ago. It is not going to be good for us to be
talking of ‘good old days’ when rather ‘things ought to be getting better for
the Lord is upon his throne…’
-
Are
we closer than before?
-
Are
we friendlier?
-
Are
we more family?
-
Can
you trust me more today than before?
-
Can
I depend on you more than when we started?
-
Are
things really getting better between us?
OR
-
Have
we drifted apart more than before?
-
Have
we ended up making more ‘enemies’ than we had when we came in?
-
……..
It
is proper that we search ourselves before we go from here. If we see that
things are not better, let us make the needed adjustments today.
This
matter is so important to the Lord that He made it a prayer point for the
church when He was about to leave the Earth. He prayed earnestly that His
disciples be one (be united) and he went on to clarify this, giving us the
standard and the reason. –
(a)
Just as you
are in me and I am in you.
– as we are so united that there is no dividing line.
(b)
So that the
world may believe that you have sent me.
– though the world is full of divisions and segregation (I am this, you are
that….) but NOT SO in heaven. Let their unity be a testimony that ‘you have
sent me’. This means that whenever we exhibit any act of disunity among
ourselves, we are indeed working against Jesus, the very foundation of our
faith.
MAJOR CAUSES OF DIVISION
1.
WHO I AM. Come down today. (If only
we see ourselves as Human and Christian)
2.
WHAT YOU DID. Forgive unreservedly
today.
WHERE UNITY IS NEEDED
a.
AT HOME. Do all you can to be at
peace with your spouse. Your spouse is not an opponent to be defeated but a
partner to be loved.
b.
IN THE CHURCH. Why would you be the
source of confusion in your Father’s house
c.
EVERYWHERE
CONCLUSION.
Check
out the Pastor’s Corner. See the imagery of mountain climbers…. As they go
higher they come closer, if you find that rather than draw closer with years
you are indeed drifting apart, check closely, you are likely not going higher
in your walk with God and meeting at the ‘top’ may be elusive to you.
Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)
25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

PASTOR’S
CORNER
At the base
of a mountain, climbers may be scattered and far apart, but as they climb
higher, the space between them decreases and they keep coming closer to each
other until they ultimately meet at the top. This should picture the church, as
we grow in our Christian faith we ought to become more united until we
eventually meet in heaven. Is it so with us in NSBC?
