Sunday Service (12th May, 2019) - Mothers' Day

TOPIC:    THE AVAILABLE WOMAN
TEXT:      EXODUS 2: 1 - 10
1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.
3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5 Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it.
6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. "This is one of the Hebrew babies," she said.
7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?"
8 "Yes, go," she answered. And the girl went and got the baby's mother.
9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you." So the woman took the baby and nursed him.
10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water."

INTRODUCTION
Mothers are a special breed of people that humanity cannot but appreciate.  A person was quoted as saying sometime that because ‘God cannot be everywhere, He created Mothers’

LESSON
In this passage, these two Levites got married almost immediately, the man seemed to disappear. While the man got a single mention, the woman was referred to ten times. After the man married, he went out of the radar but the woman
-          Got pregnant and gave birth
-          Saw that the boy was no ordinary child (a special baby – NLT)
-          Hid him for three months
-          Etc
This woman, Jochebed is a very good example of an ‘available woman’ . she gave birth at a time that the powers that be had decreed that sons must drown in the waters of the Nile, (very much like the decree from hell today that sons must ‘drown’ in fornication, in drug abuse, in examination malpractices, etc). But this woman dedicated her time to her son and hid him from the forces of destruction for 3 months. When she couldn’t hide him any longer she had to release him to the world. But instead of throwing her son into the Nile, she fortified him
-          With a papyrus basket. To protect him from the elements.
-          With tar and Pitch. To make him stay afloat and not go under
-          Strategically placed him.
MOTHERS are you in any way available to your family?
-          Papyrus basket. Of solid home training
-          Tar and pitch coat. Of Spiritual training. To make your child immune to sin.
-          Strategic placement. Of academic and career mentoring.
It is very unfortunate many things occupy the time of many mothers today, some are legitimate while some are nonsensical.
1.      CAREER. Mothers today are well read and they occupy important positions in offices…. no time for any ‘papyus basket’. Home training is now substituted with ‘school training’
2.      SOCIALS.  These have taken over the lives of some mothers that they have no time for their children.

CONCLUSION
Are you as a mother available for your home to nurture and care for it? as a father, are you missing in action like Amram as recorded here? Determine to change your ways today.
