Sunday Service (14th April, 2019) - Palm Sunday

TOPIC: NOT MY WILL LORD
TEXT: LUKE 22: 39- 44
39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."
41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."
43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
INTRODUCTION
Today is Palm Sunday, a day set aside to mark the triumphal entry of our Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. The triumphal entry is the ‘bright’ prelude, the opening chapter of the passion week, a week that culminated in the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Lord Jesus rode on that Donkey with all the fanfare of that day knowing fully that the shouting and dancing wouldn’t lead to a throne (on earth) but to the cross...but he went through it all for our sakes.
LESSON
On the night of his arrest, Jesus and the disciples went to a usual place for him to commune with his Father. At this time, Jesus, fully aware of what awaited him, prayed (See Vs 42) "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." And the Prayer point is of importance to us today.
A.    FATHER, THIS IS MY DESIRE.  Take this cup from me. Remember. This ‘cup’ is not a cup of tea, it is of death. Not just death, but an agonizing, terrible death that is accompanied by excruciating pain. Death on the cross – and Jesus knew it. I don’t think Jesus’ desire was that he wanted no longer to die for humanity, NO, I think it was the manner of death – the death on the cross- that was the source of concern that day.
I once had to stay at the bedside a man dying of AIDS, and I pray to God, I will never have to witness such again….
B.     BUT NOT MY WILL, LORD. Jesus said this as a mark of total surrender to the Lord His Father, his life depicted the wordings of our song “Even though it be a cross that raiseth me; still all my song shall be, Nearer my God to thee….” (BH 322)

CONCLUSION
As we celebrate Easter this year, one thing we should remember is that it is a celebration of a life fully surrendered to the will of God. Imagine Jesus had not submitted to the will of the Father…
-          Where will our power for new life be?     If he had refused to be beaten
-          Where will our healing come from?    If he had by passed the cross, with its nails and the spear at his side
-          Where will the power deliverance by the blood come from?
·         If Jesus had avoided the cross, he would remain a great prophet, a miracle worker….
·         But, he would not have been the MESSIAH
We are what we are because Jesus submitted to the will of His Father. Learn from him because until will love God and trust Him to the point of saying to Him, NOT MY WILL BUT YOUR WILL LORD, we can NEVER fulfill our full potential in Christ….  Therefore, celebrate Easter 2019 with a new resolve to fully surrender to God.
